CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

Thursday, December 1, 2005
Bazaar 10 AM  -  2 PM  Luncheon 11 AM

Dear Episcopal Churchwomen:

Just as songbirds are harbingers of spring, The Church of the Nativity Christmas Bazaar heralds the holiday season. There is so much talent between the school and the church that we hope to involve everyone.

To business! The bazaar menu is a classic, including the luncheon plate, country ham sandwich, chicken salad plate, chicken salad sandwich and peanut butter & jelly sandwich. These include cranberry relish, potato chips, beverage and cookies from the always-filled cookie plate.

For your friends who look forward to the carryout service, the phone number is 564-5850.

Churchwomen are asked to donate chicken salad (2 parts diced white chicken to 1 part chopped celery, mixed with Hellman’s (the secret ingredient) mayonnaise for the luncheon. Please not use Lite Hellman’s or any other seasonings. Please be as generous with the quantity of chicken salad as you can! This is especially important, because we hoped that an outside caterer could supplement the chicken salad, but it is not possible. It’s up to us, and we’ve proven, year after year, that we can do it deliciously!

The constantly replenished plates of Christmas cookies are one of the biggest attractions of the luncheon. To that end, we ask churchwomen to make and bring six dozen homemade cookies.

Setup will be Wednesday, November 30, at 3:00 P. M. Cookies and chicken salad should be brought to Hunter Hall Wednesday afternoon or by 8:30 A. M. the morning of the bazaar, Dec. 1.

Treats such as baked goods, fudge, and divinity are big sellers, so please consider donating something from your kitchen. Please label whatever you make, providing the name of the item, your name, and any special instructions, such as need for refrigeration, or how to heat. There will be craft items, white elephant items, and the traditional raffle of a Nativity scene, too.

The proceeds from the Bazaar benefit the Nativity Montessori School and the ECW, which funds projects at our church and throughout the community.

This is such a wonderful event; participation is invited, encouraged, entreated – with the knowledge that the effort brings rewards – friendship, laughter, and Christmas spirit guaranteed to last through Christmas and well into the New Year!

The Bazaar Steering Committee

Kaye Browning, Chairman

September 25, 2005 No. 2.

VESTRY CHANGES:
Jay I. Andrews has resigned as Senior Warden and from the Vestry. See your new wardens listed below, with phone numbers. Lou Browning is the new Clerk of the Vestry. If anyone is interested in serving on the Vestry, please telephone wardens, Marion Russell (606 564-5471), or Lou Browning (606 564-4020).
SERVICES:
Morning prayer is read on Sundays at 9:45 A. M., unless supply priests can assist us. Very few supply priests are available. Old friends were very happy to see the Rev. Joan Smith, who celebrated communion the past two Sundays.
RECTOR SEARCH:
Your Search Committee has placed a Rector Wanted ad in The Living Church, to run for six weeks; so far, several priests have enquired about the position and the SC is talking with them. As it receives National Church profiles, the SC screens them, and immediately gets in touch with those who seem to be possibilities. These persons do not know we get their names: many of them have no interest in leaving their current position; some are retired or in school, but the SC still follows up on them. Few hold any promise thus far. We have also asked Trinity Seminary and Nashota House seminaries for names, but haven’t received any. Bishop Sauls and Diocesan Deployment Officer, Canon Johnnie Ross, continue to assist us in finding possible rector candidates. Anyone having a name to suggest should call Dr. Bob Ross or Lou Browning.
ECW:
ECW meets at Geraís Park Lake cottage on Wed., 9/28, about 4:30 - 5:00 P.M. Call Marion (606 564-5471) about car-pooling from Nativity.
RECTORY RENTAL:
The vestry decided to investigate, and, if felt appropriate, pursue, the renting of our empty rectory on a very short-term basis, i.e., 30 day rental period(s). Any rent received will help defray renovation costs for a new rector and keep the property occupied. Please advise Michael Griswold of any tenants you can suggest, since as Junior Warden, he is in charge.

Given the difficulty in obtaining supply priests for communion services, the vestry has decided that until further notice, we will remain at one Sunday service at 9:45 A. M.
Mary Kilbourn Huey will read Morning Prayer at least on August 28 and Sept. 4th.

Search Committee update:
After the first group proved unfruitful, a second batch of resumés has come from the Diocese; after screening, the SC has chosen some to check to for an interest in a new job, in the Diocese of Lexington, and in Nativity. It is important to remember that the persons whose names come to us this way have no idea that we have their resumés. They may have no wish to move. SC will also advertise in The Living Church. Thus far the SC has looked at nearly 80 resumés.

Leaving the Episcopal Church to attend another, Millie Pitakis wrote to say she could no longer do altar linens. Gera Andrews will do both fair linens and altar linens. Angie Ross has also left the Episcopal Church; she and Annlyn Purdon have given up Altar Guild. Elizabeth Sewell (564 4852) and Diane Shouse (564 6466) are stepping in to do the work. If you wish to help with the Altar Guild, call them.
The Choir plans to begin singing again on Sept. 11.

ECW will be meeting on September 28 at park lake. Contact Gera Andrews for more informsation.

NATIVITY MONTESSORI SCHOOL
The Episcopal Day School, founded in 1974 has a first-class reputation for the education of young children. The classroom has been renovated and reinvented as Nativity Montessori School. The name evokes two wonderful traditions, the connection with the Episcopal Church of the Nativity and the Montessori tradition.
Director and Montessori teacher, Dottie Houser, Montessori teacher Frances Shirley, teachers Connie Stambaugh, and Dana Cates will combine their talents to bring the Montessori curriculum to young children in the area. It is an enriched curriculum, including academics, music, theatrical arts and fine arts.
School has already started for kindergartners, four year olds and three year olds. If you have any doubt that education can be a joy, simply be present in the church during school hours, something magical happens and it can be felt in every part of the building.
Dottie Houser, the new director of the school, holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Morehead. She has extensive experience as a teacher and credits her training in the Orton-Gillingham Multi Sensory Approach to Reading, and Project Read, as providing an excellent base for her Montessori training. The emphasis in these programs, through the Montessori method, is individualization of students, freedom of choice, and building self-esteem. Dottie says the "hands on" style of teaching comes naturally to her.
Frances Shirley who has over twenty-five years of experience working with young children, is excited about the new school. Come and see us.
